We Commemorate
Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, President’s Day. What’s missing? Neighbor Appreciation Day (or Love Thy Neighbor Day). How often have we said, “If we can’t get along with our neighbors next door, how do we expect to be able to get along with people of other countries?”The purpose of this letter is to begin a “grass roots” effort to improve relationships with our neighbors. If you are fortunate to have good neighbors, tell them how much you appreciate them. Send them a thank you card through the mail (not e-mail).If you have a difficult neighbor, send them a sincere card acknowledging that there are problems, and you would like to open a dialog to possibly solve some of the problems. Three days later personally deliver a small gift for them. (No food!) Invite them over for coffee to continue the communication. If the rift between you is great, give them one of your family heirlooms. Tell them how much that heirloom means to you, but you want them to have it. Remember everything you have is rented! What happens when we all die? Our house, car, furniture, and all other “stuff” goes to someone else. So, aren’t we renting it for now?Kindness should beget kindness. Animosity breeds animosity. Ask me, I’ve been there!Talk this over with your friends and family. June 25th is Neighbor Appreciation Day.Let’s commemorate it yearly, but feel it daily!
